Great Wall Motor Achieved Breakthrough on Engine Technology

On August 14th, 2010, Great Wall Motor Company Limited held the off-line ceremony of GW4D20 diesel engine/K5-4D20 entire car, which marked the breakthrough made by Great Wall Company on the low-emission and high-power engine.

GW4D20 diesel engine is a kind of 2-liter and high-capacity diesel engine independently researched and developed by Great Wall Motor. It is mainly equipped on Great Wall Motor SUV, MPV, Pick-up, B-level car and other models. The power of this engine reaches 55kw per liter, which reaches the level of 3-liter engine of the same type and exceeds 10% compared to the same type of domestic and overseas products.



Comprehensive oil consumption of Haval H5 equipped with this engine is 7.7 liters, lowered by over 20% compared to famous brand cars equipped with 3-liter emission engines home and abroad.


With the breakthrough on the combustion system and other key technologies, the emission of the entire car equipped with this engine could basically meet the Euro V standards.


GW4D20 diesel engine is currently the lowest yawp type among the high capacity diesel engines. When equipped on Haval H5, the average decibel in the cab is 45.3dB(A), which is not significantly different with gasoline engine and better than diesel models of international famous brands.


In 2009, the State Council formally issued Adjustment and Vitalization Plan for Auto Industry, which requires “specially support R&D of diesel engine whose emission is lower than 3 liters and power per liter reaches over 45kw”to be one of enterprises’main tasks on independent innovation. The capacity standards of GW4D20 diesel engine by Great Wall Company have already much overmatched the above requirement.


Since May, 2007, Great Wall Motor has successively invested 0.52 billion Yuan in the R&D of GW4D20 diesel engine; on June 28th, 2008, combustion was successfully finished; in the end of 2009, after two years continuous hard working, this type of engine finally completed its R&D.


At the Science and Technology Achievement Appraisal Conference of GW4D20 Diesel Engine on July 30th, 2010, this type of engine gained high appraises by expert assessment committees home and abroad from China Automotive Technology Research Center, Society of Automotive Engineers of China, the United Kingdom Bulunaier University, Tsinghua University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, etc. They commented that this type of engine adopted many advanced technologies; the core technologies was totally researched and developed independently; the capacity was advanced; the innovative points were outstanding; it had reached leading level through out the country and owned wide application future and great social benefits.


Wang Binggang, leader of the Panel of National Clean Car Coordination Office, specially employed expert of Important Science and Technology Specialty of “Energy Saving and New energy Car” under Program 863 of State Ministry of Science and Technology, and former director of China Automotive Technology Research Center assessed, “We are greatly moved and mostly encouraged by Great Wall Motor which, as a private enterprise, could carve out its own R&D road in a not long period. The independent R&D experience of Great Wall Motor should be well spread out. We should encourage the car manufacturing enterprises that never move forward and own doubts in car engine R&D to bravely give a try.


At present, mass production of GW4D20 has begun and the total production capacity will break 140,000 sets by the end of 2011.
