On Feb.22, Great Wall Motors signed a strategic cooperation agreement at its office with Korea’s Pohang Iron and Steel Co. Ltd. (POSCO), and both sides will upgrade their cooperation from pure product procurement to technological research & development cooperation.

According to the Agreement, both sides shall extensively conduct cooperation in application of such new materials as advanced high-tensile steel and third-generation high-tensile steel as well as such new process utilization as hot forming and hydraulic forming. In addition, POSCO will assist Great Wall Motors in terms of research & development in the primary stage, such as providing manufacturability analyses and formability analyses on body-in-white parts of models under research as well as technological support during the mold development stage to Great Wall Motors.

POSCO is the first steel supplier of Great Wall Motors carrying out the overseas steel procurement. They began their business contact early in 2007, and in the optimization of Great Wall Motors mass production vehicle’s torque beam material, POSCO's technological support is used. Mr. Huang Yong, the President of Great Wall Motors Research Institute, commented this cooperation like this: "The pursuit for high-quality products by both sides are the same, and their cooperation shall be a new turning point and beginning for both sides." Mr. Jin Shanyuan, a Senior Director of POSCO, expressed: "As its new products are upgrading without cease, we shall provide more and better automobile sheet steels to Great Wall Motors."

Internationalized technological cooperation is a major characteristic of technology R & D of Great Wall Motors, and it is also an important part for it to creat high quality products with high-performance design supported by high-tech equipment, and achieve "Three-High Strategy". In recent years, Great Wall Motors has conducted cooperations with many world-famous firms such as BOSCH, Delphi, Valeo, TRW & MAHLE in U.S., Ricardo, Le Groupe Dassault, YARK and BorgWarner in terms of engine, transmission and entire car design. The cooperation with POSCO this time is another important measure for Great Wall Motors to utilize top resources in the world to build high-quality products.
